Fragrant large-flowered garden roses are popular. Healthy garden roses with fragrance are preferred by consumers.
Health and fragrance
A lot has been added to health in the creation of new garden roses over the last 20 years, but now they also have to smell.
Fragrance sells and if the rose is also remounting, ie. flowers again and again throughout the season, it is a safe hit.
It takes approx. 10-15 years to develop a good garden rose, since testing period is outdoors and very long.
Strong Danish roses
Danish bred roses are robust, because they have been tested for 5-7 years in the very changing winter weather in Denmark, which can sometimes be damp and rainy, but at other times offers heavy frost and wind.
‘The changing winter weather over several years gives us a good picture of which garden roses can be sent on the market,’ says rose-breeder Rosa Eskelund, who together with her husband Harley Eskelund has bred roses for more than 25 years.
‘The same rose grows for up to 5 years in the field and here we see which are robust and healthy, it is not enough to be beautiful and fragrant, points out Harley Eskelund. Health has become a must with the modern garden owner who wants a garden that looks good without spraying against diseases.
Rosa and Harley Eskelund are already known in rose breeding, with several series of mini roses among the very popular Infinity and Forever roses that are in production on a larger scale in several places around the world.
Fragrant bestsellers
The garden roses are bred on selected mothers and fathers. Health, fragrance and robustness have high priority and it has also resulted in several bestsellers among the fragrant climb rose ‘Our Last Summer’, the brand new ‘Royal Diva’ as well as ‘Inger’s rose’ (syn. ‘Inger Forever’).
Rosa and Harley’s garden roses are marketed under the brand name, ‘Plant’n’relax’ – just plant and relax.
